2019: Lagos SDP holds strategic meeting

The Lagos chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), last Wednesday, held its weekly meeting where its members strategized on the way forward with regards to the general elections billed to hold next year.

The meeting, chaired by the party’s chairman in Lagos, Chief Olatunde Onakoya, held at the Surulere area of the state, and had the party’s bigwigs and many of its members present.

Speaking at the event, Onakoya said there were many things happening, and that the road was not yet clear, assuring the meeting that the party membership would be informed as soon as things became clearer.

He added that the present political dispensation was not child’s play and that each group in the state should strengthen their local governments.

“Lagos houses about 20 million people, so you should know the enormity of the task presented in your attempt to touch every local government in it. The race is long, and we need to endure. It’s our hope that we shall all be able to live up to expectation,” said party boss.

Many members of the party present at the meeting noted that it was obvious that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the umbrella body for Igbos, was solidly behind the party as the only party that believed in restructuring, and had held their inaugural meeting in the Shomolu area of the state the previous Sunday.

On his part, Dr. Pearse said fiscal restructuring and social welfare measures were paramount in the party’s consideration. He added that each state in the current federal structure has its own natural resources it needs to develop, a fact the federal government is shying away from.

He stated that the state police clamour was an essential one.

“The South East, South West, South South and North Central regions are all committed to restructuring, which will make or break the next election, alongside social welfare programmes, which are our cardinal points,” he added.

He added that the party was undergoing a lot of challenges because of its policy of not collecting money from its aspirants, “but the fact still stands that the only party that can offer you the opportunity to represent your people and bring comfort to them is the SDP because all the others are balkanised.”

Local governments areas represented at the meeting include Epe, Eti-Osa, Ibeju Lekki, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Ojo, Shomolu and Surulere.

Onakoya reminded the meeting that the party’s national convention is billed to hold in August.
